Tourism is thriving on the beautiful island of Dominic Republic, but a lack of access to good quality education means that many young people aren’t from benefitting from the career opportunities this brings.
Even though hotels and resorts are looking for skilled staff, youth unemployment in the country is still high, as many young people have low levels of education and lack the knowledge and skills they need to work in the tourism sector. Young people from vulnerable communities face even greater difficulties in securing stable and well-paid jobs, especially young women who may be vulnerable to sexual exploitation and young mothers who have no access to childcare, making it impossible for them to work.
So, the TUI Care Foundation and Plan International are working together to provide education and employment to young people and address the gap between youth unemployment and job opportunities. After almost 10 years of successful implementation of the programme in the Dominican Republic, the TUI Academy is now expanding to 40 communities in 7 districts in the province of Alta Gracia.
The TUI Academy Dominican Republic aims to empower young people socially and economically, and enable the students, more than 60% of whom are female, to increase their opportunities to obtain decent work.
