SUPPORTING WOMEN THROUGH SCHOLARSHIPS

Gender equality between male and female employees makes for better quality of service – especially in the tourism sector – but in Tunisia many women struggle to find good employment. TUI Care Foundation is supporting scholarships that enable Tunisian students to undertake internships at a hotel. This supports diversity and gives women a better chance of building a successful career in the Tunisian tourism industry.

Tunisia is considered one of the most liberal countries in the Arab world, but many women struggle to find good jobs in the tourism sector: only some ten to thirty percent of tourism employees in Tunisia are women, compared to around sixty percent of the sector’s employees globally.

In addition, women often face limited opportunities for promotion in their jobs due to inadequate training. The result is that their salaries remain low, even though they often have families to support.

The goal of this project is to support students from the hotel school Maghrébin Institut de Management et de Tourisme to do internships in a hotel in Hammamet. A three month internship is a mandatory part of tourism education but is not accessible to all. With a scholarship, girls will have the opportunity to complete their education and improve their chances of building a successful career in the Tunisian tourism sector.

PROJECT PARTNER

The project was initiated by GIZ (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) in Tunisia and is part of the EconoWin (Economic Integration of Women in the MENA Region) programme. GIZ works with Maghrébin Institut de Management et de Tourisme. GIZ assists the German government in international cooperation and sustainable development. EconoWin works to improve the (working) conditions and integration of women in the economy and employment in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia.
