BOOSTING SMALL BUSINESS THROUGH MICROCREDIT

Setting up one’s own business gives people the chance to improve their livelihoods. Often, however, this requires start-up capital and people on low incomes have no access to loans. TUI Care Foundation therefore supported a microcredit initiative for entrepreneurs in holiday destinations in North Africa and Southeast Asia.

A small loan can make a big difference to budding entrepreneurs in Africa and Asia. With access to a little seed money, small businesses like keeping chickens or cows, making bags, or opening a bistro can offer a route out of poverty. When traditional banking services are either unavailable or entrepreneurs cannot raise collateral, microfinance offers a solution.

By making microloans available to people in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, local entrepreneurs can, for example, use the money to purchase fruit and vegetable seeds for personal consumption and sell any surplus at local markets for a small profit. Part of the profit is used to repay the loan, part is used to provide for the family and some is set aside. Over time, the entrepreneur will be able to manage the business independently and microcredit will no longer be needed.

Almost all loans are repaid on time. The amount paid back is then put towards new microcredit loans to help others start their own business and overcome poverty, contributing to sustainable development of holiday destinations.

This project was supported in 2013.
