TUI Academy Jamaica

The primary economic driver in Montego Bay is its thriving tourism and hospitality sector, and the Jamaican government anticipates that an additional 45,000 workers will be needed over the next decade to meet its employment requirements. This growth, however, stands in stark contrast to communities whose residents are grappling with social challenges, gender inequality, and a lack of vocational skills.

TUI Academy Jamaica focuses on skills training and job creation, with a specific emphasis on empowering women. By offering a dynamic and engaging learning environment, the programme enables trainees to boost their confidence and equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to secure meaningful employment and build sustainable livelihoods. It is dedicated to enhancing the employment prospects of young Jamaicans in the Montego Bay area and aims to disrupt the cycle of poverty, alleviate social inequalities, and transform the lives of Western Jamaica residents.

As the Jamaican tourism and hospitality industry grows and new job opportunities are continuously created, Montego Bay faces a pronounced shortage of skilled labour to fill these roles.

To tackle the challenge head-on, TUI Academy Jamaica offers targeted vocational training and certification to 120 young people. 70% of the students are women who live in or near Montego Bay.

The curriculum is meticulously designed to align with the specific needs of the industry, ensuring that students gain the essential skills and expertise they need to work in the evolving hospitality and tourism sector.

The Academy offers students classroom and practical training and builds partnerships with local hotels and hospitality stakeholders to provide valuable work experience and internships. This collaborative approach significantly enhances the students’ prospects for successful integration into the job market upon graduation.

A life skills and personal development training component is integral to the project, equipping participants with soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, stress management, and emotional intelligence. Additionally, the inclusion of a mentorship programme cultivates leadership skills so that the students can develop positive influences among their peers, ultimately contributing to greater inclusivity and an improved quality of life.

To support graduates to secure jobs after the training, the project incorporates job readiness sessions and job fairs. These events serve as a platform to connect trainees with industry businesses, enhancing their employability and paving the way for successful transitions into the workforce.
