SCORING GOALS IN TOURISM

Who doesn’t dream of a career as a football player? The young women from NFA Girls Centre in Windhoek certainly do. Playing sports is not only good for you, it also boosts personal confidence. But unfortunately not everyone is going to be the next Messi, therefore alongside the football and as part of the TUI Academy Programme, the TUI Care Foundation is helping these young women to also build a career in tourism.

The TUI Care Foundation grants scholarships for a hospitality education so that twelve young women from the Girls Centre on the grounds of the Namibia Football Association (NFA) in Windhoek can also train in tourism. As a destination Namibia welcomes more holidaymakers each year, which increases the number of jobs available in the tourism sector. And with the help of a hospitality education these young women have the opportunity of developing a successful career.

Beyond class based tuition, the students have the opportunity to gain practical experience in the tourism industry during their one year course. And on completion of the course graduates  receive a licensed certificate. The win-win benefits of this programme are clear: this scholarship provides young girls the opportunity to gain skilled employment  and with that the chance of a better future. And the tourism industry welcomes well trainedlocal staff.

The full-year restaurant management course officially kicked of on 1 February 2017 and drew it’s 12 person intake from the very successful introductory course in “hospitality training” for 20 which ran in 2016 at the NFA Girls Centre. The objectives of the NFA Girls Centre are to empower and support girls and young women through sport and education as well as to create safe spaces for their wellbeing. The projects at the Centre combine sport programmes with a range of learning opportunities, for example through vocational training in the hospitality and tourism industry. Evening lectures and courses on a variety of topics including sports, hospitality, healthy lifestyles, financial planning, first aid, are open to the community around the Centre.
