KIDS FOR A CLEANER CURAÇAO

Curaçao attracts many tourists thanks to its tropical beaches, beautiful sea and swaying palms. But travelling around the island, you will also spot rubbish by the roadside, on beaches and in the sea because an effective waste recycling system is lacking. With interest in 'green' issues growing in the community, GreenKidz has responded with an interactive curriculum on waste disposal and recycling – an education project supported by TUI Care Foundation.

Around the world, especially amongst the young, there is a growing interest in sustainability—including on Curaçao. But there is little accessible, locally-focused Papiamento educational material available. With improved educational activities, local youth and the general community of Curaçao can be inspired to take matters into their own hands.

With TUI Care Foundation support, a curriculum on 'Plastic and Recycling on Curacao’ will be developed. The interactive classes are suitable for students in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 from all primary schools on Curaçao and can be provided in Papiamento or Dutch, with the aim of reaching over 8,000 students. The curriculum is supported by a bilingual website in Dutch and Papiamento, a GreenKidz magazine and a GreenKidz Award which will be presented at the annual GreenKidz party.

The package will be offered free of charge by a GreenKidz guest lecturer to the target group and will include instructional and in-depth material for teachers. Local school children are encouraged to care for and act responsibly towards their living and school environment and actively contribute to a greener, cleaner, healthier Curaçao.

TUI Care Foundation hopes to set an example to other organisations on the island and to inspire all to take responsibility for effective waste management. We are also supporting the placement of recycling bins in tourist areas.

This project has ended.
