TUI Colourful Cultures Zanzibar

Traditional arts and crafts are a vital part of Zanzibar’s heritage, reflecting its rich culture and history. They are also crucial to the local economy, providing livelihoods for many artisans. However, alongside a lack of support and resources, technological advancements and globalisation also make it increasingly challenging for artisans to continue with their traditional practices.

TUI Colourful Cultures Zanzibar addresses these challenges by reviving and sustaining six gradually disappearing art forms. Engaging and informing communities through educational initiatives, including workshops in schools and cultural events during festivals, it helps to preserve Zanzibar’s cultural legacy as well as foster economic growth and cultural vibrancy.

Nestled in the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is renowned for its exotic beauty and rich cultural tapestry. Traditional arts and crafts are integral to its cultural fabric, serving as vibrant expressions of its diverse history, beliefs, and customs.

TUI Colourful Cultures Zanzibar revives and sustains six gradually disappearing art forms. Over the course of a year, 30 aspiring artists receive training in six traditional Zanzibar art forms: storytelling, pottery, wood carving, ngoma, kofia, and eco print. The training programmes ensure that these cultural practices are passed down to a new generation, preserving Zanzibar’s rich artistic traditions and breathe new life into Zanzibar’s artistic landscape.

Workshops in 21 schools, reaching approximately 11,800 students, help to further educate young people in their cultural heritage and inspire them to take an active role in its preservation. A cultural documentary highlights the journey and achievements of the students throughout the training programme.

Exhibitions and cultural events are also organised during major festivals and at premier hotels in Zanzibar, engaging around 2,400 tourists. During these events, interactive workshops provide visitors with hands-on experiences and offer participants a unique opportunity to actively participate in traditional art activities and learn new skills. Workshops include activities such as pottery making, weaving, beadwork, or traditional dance. These series of events offer artisans the opportunity to showcase their talent and provide a platform to display and sell their work.

To further enhance economic opportunities for local artists, the project establishes partnerships with 13 local businesses and participates in 20 farmers’ markets. Collaborations with relevant tourism stakeholders, including the Ministry of Tourism and other institutions leverage these partnerships to further support and promote traditional arts and crafts in Zanzibar.
