Likoni is a small, bustling coastal town in Mombasa County, Kenya. But poverty and unemployment there is high, and making ends meet for single mums can be especially difficult.
So through its Helping Hands programme, the TUI Care Foundation is supporting Likoni Women Hope & Eco, a self-help group interested in environmental protection, which helps mothers bringing up their children by themselves to generate an income and escape the cycle of poverty.
Set up by the Little Angel Association, the women from the group organise beach clean-up events and promote recycling to protect the environment, with the payment they receive helping to provide an income for their families. The Likoni women also take part in environmental workshops to build their knowledge about collecting and separating plastic waste and are looking into the working with recycling companies so that the plastic waste can be upcycled into new products. Alongside this, the women can attend workshops on how to apply for business loans and set up their own business, to help them build long-term financial security.
What a great combination – protecting the environment and empowering the women for a better financial future!
