SAVING THE RED SEA, ONE BIN AT A TIME

The Red Sea is famous for its colourful underwater world, but poor waste management means rubbish can end up in the sea – with major consequences for flora, fauna and the health of local residents and tourists. A simple solution to this problem is more rubbish bins and TUI Care Foundation is supporting this.

Coral reefs provide a shelter and rich breeding ground for marine life. The colourful coral needs sunlight to grow, but when waste from the streets of Hurghada ends up in the Red Sea, it obstructs the sunlight and breaks into small pieces that clog the coral and prevent it from getting the vital nutrients it needs. Very small plastic pieces can get absorbed into the food chain when birds, sea turtles, dolphins or fish mistake them for food and often die from eating them. Plastic waste is a danger to the ecosystem and to the health of local communities and tourists.

By placing more rubbish bins in the popular tourist centre Memsha Hurghada, waste can be collected and properly managed. The project is part of a bigger initiative to establish an effective waste system in Hurghada. This not only makes for cleaner streets, but a cleaner sea and healthier environment for marine life, local residents and tourists.

This project was supported in 2013.
