TUI Academy Greece

Greece’s ancient culture, beautiful scenery and traditional hospitality make it one of the most popular tourism destinations in Europe. Around one million Greek citizens are employed in the tourism industry, but without the training they need, finding a job in the industry is not always easy for young people.

So the TUI Care Foundation is supporting the German-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s DUAL Hellastourism training programme, which combines academic and vocational training. 20 young people between the ages of 18 and 24 have the opportunity to complete a vocational training programme in tourism or food service based on the German dual model.

The DUAL Hellas programme provides vocational training in hotel management, restaurant management and chef. All the training programmes are structured in the same way as their German counterparts and take three years to complete. The winter semester (November to March) involves theoretical and practical training at a special training centre. This is followed by six months of on-the-job training in the summer semester (April - October), when the participants work on a full-time basis at hotels and receive a full salary plus insurance and employee rights. So the trainees gain vital work experience from their very first year of training onwards.

The on the-job training takes place at 4 and 5 star hotels, including Atlantica Hotels & Resorts, a longstanding joint venture of TUI and the TUI hotel brand Robinson Club, which has two hotels in Greece on Kos and Kyllini, and a new hotel being built on Crete. As the number of jobs in these hotels increases, they have access to a pool of well-trained work experience students and employees. At the end of the three-year vocational programme the trainees take oral, written and practical examinations to obtain a dual vocational training certificate that is recognised by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK).

Young people are selected to participate in the training programme according to social criteria such as family income or equality of opportunity in socially disadvantaged communities. The objective of the initiative is to promote equal rights of access to the labour market and gender equality. At least 50% of participants are women.

The German-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce and Industry has played an important role inpromoting trade and commerce between Germany and Greece for more than 90 years. It has around 800 members in Greece and Germany. With offices in Athens and Thessaloniki it offers a harmonised, comprehensive and highquality range of services. A collaboration with the Worldwide Network of German Chambers of Commerce Abroad, which has 140 offices in 92 countries and 51,000 member companies worldwide, makes it possible to implement international projects under the international trademark. In recent years the German-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce and Industry has introduced German-model vocational training programmes in Greece which combine theoretical and in-job training.
